About the RightTherapist.com Directory
RightTherapist.com is the UK’s leading independent directory of counsellors, psychotherapists and clinical supervisors — cutting out the junk, the politics, the vested interests, and just delivering the information you need as quickly and efficiently as we can.
Why We Exist
There are plenty of counsellor and psychotherapist directories out there, each offering its own individual strengths, benefits and conveniences. In fact, if you’re searching for a counsellor, therapist, or supervisor, you probably should check them all. (Each of several national organisations such as the BACP, BABCP, and UKCP provides an old-fashioned form-based therapist directory.) In our experience, however, most of the directories we’ve seen also suffer from significant accessibility limitations. If the aim of a directory genuinely is to serve the public good — to help people make an informed decision about therapy, to help them locate the information they need to become informed quickly and easily — then many of these directories really have room for improvement. This site exists because we want to do it all quite a bit differently!
What We Do Differently
It’s easy to put together a form asking you exactly what you want and then showing whether there are any results for what you’ve specified. What’s harder, though — and what we do very differently — is to make it easy to discover what is available, progressively refining a rough idea of ‘what you want’ until you (not the directory designers) can narrow down the options to some real possibilities. To that end, each page of our therapist directory provides immediate feedback on useful ways of narrowing down your search — for example by geography, by theoretical orientation, by conditions, modes of working, and so on. We tell you in advance exactly how many results you’ll find if you narrow your search in a particular way, and we leave out all the dead-ends where looking for a particular combination of characteristics doesn’t actually yield any matches.
Our directory is also completely free to members of the public and requires no registration to use. (In our second year of operation, we introduced a new self-registration system to enable practitioners to maintain their own information in the directory, and it turns out to be hard to provide that infrastructure for free — so we have opted to charge a nominal annual fee for practitioners to use the system. We can assure you, however, that we have no plans to charge the kinds of zany listing fees demanded by certain national organisations in the UK — you know who you are.)
Who We Are
RightTherapist.com is a service of Mulhauser Consulting, Ltd., a company registered in England no. 4455464. Registered office: 31 High Street, Haverhill, Suffolk CB9 8AD. The company is registered in the United Kingdom as a Data Controller under the Data Protection Act 1998.
And Yes, We’re Independent
We operate this directory without a political agenda, without a public aura of authority to build up, without a big marketing budget to persuade practitioners to part with lots of cash, and without the powerful vested interests that the UK’s largest counselling and psychotherapy organisations would probably rather you didn’t know about.
Our independence helps us to cut out the junk and just deliver the data to you as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Where Our Information Comes From
With an exception noted below, all practitioner information in this directory is either public domain, non-personal information sourced and indexed from other publicly available websites — much like Google does when setting out to index the entire web — or it is provided to us directly by practitioners themselves through our self-registration system. (In the case of gathering public domain information from other sites, we do not accept data from any website which includes standard machine-readable instructions that data should not be collected, such as directives in a robots.txt
file or a meta robots
tag. And unlike Google, we also manually check each applicable website and do not collect information from any page which links to terms of use requesting that information not be collected in this way.)
This means that all practitioner information contained within the main sections of this directory has either been supplied directly by an individual self-registering on the site as a practitioner or has been corroborated by one or more other sites which we believe to be authoritative and which have separately made the information available to the public. As indicated on our Safety page, however, we have not independently investigated and verified the authenticity of information contained within the directory.

A Note About Copyright
We operate a directory made up solely of 1) facts, 2) maps, and, for some entries, 3) a brief informational note provided by the practitioner. It is our understanding that nobody holds or can legitimately claim any copyright on the facts in this directory, and individual practitioners hold the copyright on any brief informational notes they have provided. Maps are provided by Mapbox from OpenStreetMap data. Therefore, it would be unreasonable for us to claim any copyright whatsoever on any data within this directory.
National and international legal precedents maintain that the facts collected within a directory are not copyrightable but that the organisation and layout specific to a particular directory may be, provided that they are of sufficient originality. RightTherapist.com asserts that the facts within this directory have been selected, coordinated, or arranged in such a way that the resulting work as a whole constitutes an original work of authorship and is therefore copyright © 2024, with all rights reserved. This applies also to the UK’s legal principle of ‘database right’. This assertion does not apply to any individual item of information within the directory.
