About this Service
I am a Counselling Therapist and am Registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am originally from Scotland and now live in Wales. I went to art school, then taught art in schools and colleges. In 2005 I qualified as a Counselling Therapist and for the past 16 yrs I have had the privilege of working with young people under and over the age of 18. I work mostly with young people in their 20’s and 30’s including students in higher and further education. I call myself an integrative counselling therapist and my practice is informed by different counselling approaches. Each person is unique and I work collaboratively with my clients using approaches specific to needs.
I believe that one of the most important aspects of counselling is the relationship between the counsellor and client. In order to provide my clients with the opportunity to explore and discuss their feelings and issues I try to be empathic, non-judgemental and genuine. I also believe in the importance of really listening. I have found that we rarely listen to one another and the affirmation of having been listened to cannot be underestimated. Life changes such as leaving home can be exciting, challenging and sometimes traumatic, it can be the first opportunity to discuss and explore issues and situations that occurred in the years before leaving home. These can be dysfunctional parental relationships, relationships between a parent and significant other, complex family relationships, bereavement and suicide, domestic violence, sexual, physical and emotional abuse, ill health physical and mental and caring responsibilities and personal relationships. As well as these and other issues I welcome the opportunity to work with people questioning their sexuality. As well as the above many people have had extremely difficult experiences due to the pandemic and these could have completely altered what they had planned for their forthcoming years and possibly beyond.
I try to help the client gain an understanding of their feelings, the reasons they came to see me and explore possible ways forward.
